Mattie Louise (Smith) Awkard

Mattie Louise Awkard, 71, of Waynesboro, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2016. Mattie was an amazing woman, mother and friend. She was loved and cherished by so many.  Her smile and laughter will be remembered forever.

She was born January 27, 1945 in Nelson County to the late Sterling and Mattie Jordan Smith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashlyn Hailey Sanders and numerous sisters and brothers.

She is survived by her daughters, Priscilla D. Awkard and Jennifer Awkard; brother, Ampy Smith and wife, Regenia; sisters, Verdie Mae Johnson and Ollie Lee Goines; sister-in-law, Hilda Awkard; special nieces, Barbara Jean Cauls and Jane White. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and other loving family members.

Special thank you to the doctors and nurses in the ICU at Augusta Health for taking such loving care of our Mother during her final days.

The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00pm on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939, where a service will be held in the chapel at 12:00pm conducted by Pastor Philip A. Carter.

Interment at Riverview Cemetery will be at a later date due our areas recent inclement weather.
