Robert M. Smedile, 86, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026. He was born on January 25, 1939, in New Jersey, the son of the late Charles Salvatore Smedile and the late Edith May Gaskell Smith.
Robert retired in 2000 as an Executive Driver. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a proud member of the Charlottesville–Albemarle American Legion Post 74. He enjoyed fishing and taking long drives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Gloria Smedile, Adelyne Hayes, Barbara (Peter) Sherba, and Ruth (William) Barrett, as well as his brother, Franklin Smedile.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Fanny Smedile; his children, Robert (Daneen) Smedile, Donna (Martin) Lerner, and John Smedile; his stepchildren, John Wilson, Paulina Vargas (Jesus Almazan), Javier Vargas (Sarah Quinzu), and Veronica Vargas (Ahmed Mohamed); his grandchildren, Scott (Kit), Connor (Katie), Shea Smedile, Allison (Devin) Peregoy, John Jr., Cherie Smedile, Garrett, Ty Salameno, Corey Gammon-Vargas, Jayden and Yaretzy Almazan; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Patrick (Ellen) Smedile, and his niece, Laura Paul-Badaracco.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 301 Sheppard Ct., Waynesboro, VA 22980, celebrated by the Reverend Monsignor Timothy Keeney. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 noon until the time of the Mass. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro.
