Obituary

Quinon Maurice Gresham  passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the Retreat at Fishersville.  He had been battling Alzheimer’s for the past few years.  Maurice, also known as “Mo” by many friends  and “Daddy Mo” by his grandchildren, was born on February 11, 1940, to Quinon Robertson Gresham and Mada Clement Gresham in Fordyce, Arkansas.  He grew up in Fordyce, hunting and fishing in the area and attending school there, graduating high school in 1958.

He attended Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, graduating in 1962 with a B.S. in Mathematics and an R.O.T.C. commission into the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant.  It was at Henderson that he met his future wife, Lucille.  They were married in June of 1963 and Maurice was promptly sent to Fort Hood, Texas, where he and Lucille spent the next two years. Upon deciding not to stay in the Army, Maurice heard from a friend that DuPont in Waynesboro, VA, was hiring and he sent them his resume, which is how he ended up a Virginian.  He spent 37 years with the DuPont Company working in Acetate, Orlon and then Lycra, in the Waynesboro Plant and the Maydown Plant in Northern Ireland, finishing up his career in Lycra Tech Marketing, based in Wilmington, DE, but working and traveling out of his home.

Maurice had a great sense of humor, loved a good joke, and laughed a lot.  He enjoyed playing tennis and golf and loved to surf fish, all of which he did until his body would no longer allow it.  He loved nature and the out-of-doors and he and his family camped  for many years.  Later, he enjoyed traveling, and he and Lucille were fortunate  enough to visit many foreign countries as well as a lot of the United States.

Maurice was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro for over 50 years, serving on many committees and the Diaconate.   He served on the board at the DuPont Community Credit Union for 17 years.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Lucille Suggs Gresham, a daughter, Jill Gresham Schweiger, (Craig), a son, Bradley Maurice Gresham, ( Jennifer); 5 grandchildren:  Steven Gresham Schweiger, Kaitlin Noelle Schweiger, Duncan Bradley Gresham, (Vienna), Quinon Andrew Gresham,  T.C. Gresham,  a sister, Frances Gresham Frazier;  a brother, James Evans Gresham, (Gwen) a sister-in-law, Kathleen Suggs, a brother-in-law, Jack David Suggs (Susan) and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, and a sister, Nova, as well as his mother and father.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Waynesboro, VA at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12th.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association using act.alz.org/donate or the First Baptist Church, 301 S. Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
