Marie Schmitt Obituary

Marie Sandy Schmitt, 86, of Waynesboro, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at her home. She was born on October 18, 1938 in Washington, D.C. to the late Paul Marshall Sandy and Ruth Marie (Priest) Sandy.

Marie was a graduate of Suitland High School and attended Secretarial School. She worked as a Teller Specialist with several positions with City National Bank. Marie also was business owner and Licensed Real Estate Broker. She also was employed at Hecht’s Department Store, Schmitt’s Family Pharmacy, Helwig Realty and City National Banks. Marie was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Churchville, VA, Trinity Lutheran Church in Merrill, WI and Grace Lutheran in Omro, WI. Marie served a Brownie Leader, Cub Scout Leader, Assistant Teacher with Kindergarteners, and Activities Planner. Her hobbies included playing Bridge and Canasta.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Anton Schmitt and her sister, Doris Jean Sandy.

Survivors include her children, Nancy Lynn Schmitt of Waynesboro and Gary Paul Schmitt and his wife, Marie Kilmarton Schmitt of San Francisco, CA; six grandchildren: David Stushek of Appleton, WI, Kayele Stushek of Battle Ground, WA, Erin Stushek of Charlottesville, Dr. Sarah Schmitt of New York, NY, Benjamin Schmitt of Washington D.C., and Emily Schmitt of San Francisco, CA; great grandchildren, Jamison Stushek of Appleton, WI; siblings, Mary Louise Sandy and husband, Donald Oliver of Poquoson, VA and Paul Marshall Sandy, Jr., and wife, Sandra Williams Sandy of Staunton;  nephew, Ross Sandy and wife, Heather; great grandniece, Ashtyn Sandy; great grandnephew, Easton Sandy; as well as extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Nancy L. Schmitt, 213 Robin Rd., Waynesboro, VA, 22980, to be used for a memorial in Marie’s name.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Charlton and Groome Funeral Home in Fishersville.
