John Chilton Reed

John Chilton Reed of Fishersville, son of Herbert and Ethelyn Reed, went to be with the Lord on January 17, 2022 at his home. John is survived by his wife, Anne and their son, Graham Chilton “Jack”; his daughter, Mary Mason “Molly” Carroll and her husband, Sean; his son, Mason Chilton Reed and his wife, Jacqueline; their mother, Jean Freeman Reed; his grandchildren: Elizabeth Mason “Ellie” Carroll, Preston John Carroll, Marion Penelope “Poppy” Reed and Mason Chilton Reed, Jr.; his twin brother, Dr. James Reed and his wife, Elizabeth; his chosen son, Girbson Bijou; his close friends: Ric Aldhizer, Max Guggenheimer, Stephen Harris, Nick St. George and Frank Fisher and his constant canine companion, Rudy.

John was born May 22, 1938 in Alton, Illinois and lived a life filled with vibrancy, energy and service to others. He was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and William and Mary School of Law, served for four years in the U.S. Army, Infantry, and ultimately served as a prosecutor in Augusta County focusing on cases where children had been victims of abuse.  He served on the board of directors for the Valley Mission, Big Brother and Big Sisters, United Way, was faculty for CASA, and served as a deacon and an elder at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, where he also taught the Middle School Sunday School Class and sang in the Praise Band.

John’s greatest joy was his family, particularly his children of which he was very proud. John’s true passion in life was his mission work in Haiti, working with refugees in Florida and later leading youth and medical team mission groups to the country for decades. His crowning achievement was the construction of a three story vocational school in the mountains of Haiti, Frances Landers Tech, to enable the young people there to develop the skills they needed to become self-sustaining.  

A Celebration of Life is scheduled at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 11 a.m.

 In lieu of flowers, John asked that donations be made to the Haiti Fund at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, 30 Tinkling Spring Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939 or the Haiti Education Foundation (HEF), P.O. Box 10775, El Dorado Arkansas 71730.
