Janet (Marie) Spencer Humphries

12/14/1922 – 8/8/2021

“She lived a good life”

     These are the words she wanted us to remember when she left this earthly life to move to her heavenly one.  Janet was a fun loving and caring wife and mother.  Janet was born in Spring Creek, VA to John Letcher Spencer and Minnie Freeman Spencer.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Lyle Humphries, Sr. and eleven siblings.  She is survived by her children, Linda H. Brown (Henry), Deborah H. Morse (Edwin), Kenneth Lyle Humphries, Jr. and Anne H. Buttz.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

     Throughout her life her priorities were her strong faith in God, her family and her accounting career.  She was a faithful servant in the Presbyterian Church in every community she lived in, and there were many.  These roles included being a deacon, elder and Stephen Minister as well as being president of the Women of the Church in the First Presbyterian Church of Staunton.

She was active in leadership roles in the community to include being a very active member of the Women’s Club in Roanoke, VA and being president of the Quota Club of Staunton, VA.  She was proud to represent them at a conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.

     Janet’s career focus was in accounting.  She loved telling the story of landing her first job in a bank while her husband served in WWII. She went on to own an accounting business located in the professional building in downtown Staunton.  She ended her career working for the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg where she moved their accounting from a ledger to a computer-based program.

   Janet loved sharing memories of her time growing up in Dayton, VA. She shared her escapades in a book titled “A Lifetime of Memories”. One of her most treasured memories was that of her trip with her sister Belle to the Holy Lands.

Services will be held at 11:00 A. M., Saturday, August 21, 2021 in the Mausoleum at Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens, 1921 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton.
