George Stanley Elstad, 94, of Stuarts Draft, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 25, 2022 in Fishersville.
George was born on May 19, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Anton Elstad and the late Martha Anderson Elstad.
He attended the College of Staton Island and New York University. He was in the US Army from 1945 to 1947 as an Assistant Chaplin during WWII. He was a Pastor of Christ Assembly Church in Staton Island and retired in 1996 and was a member of Staton Island Council of Churches. He wrote for a column entitled “Religiously Speaking” for the Staton Island Advance, was an accomplished pianist, loved classical music, and was an avid reader of various books and most of all, the Bible.
George had a special quote, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life!” and a special Bible verse, Isaiah 30:15, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.”
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Shenandoah Hospice House for their wonderful care.
George was the youngest of his siblings and the last of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Laura B. Elstad; son, Kenneth R. Elstad; daughter, Mildred A. Elstad; son-in-law, Robert L. Gortler; siblings, Peter Elstad, Betty Elstad, Ann Elstad, Helen Estad, Ruth Elstad, Raymond Elstad and Ralph Elstad.
George is survived by his wife of 23 years, Helen H. Pullin; daughter, Molly E. Gortler; step-daughter, Barbara P. Sholes; step-son, James W. Pullin and his wife, Lori A. Pullin; grandchildren, Christopher G. Sholes, Joseph W. Sholes, Laura P. Kearney and Cynthia R. Pullin and three step-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 5, 2022, conducted by Pastor Steve Paulus at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home in Fishersville,
Burial will be private at Tinkling Spring Cemetery in Fishersville.
