Evelyn "Punky" Mae Smith Obituary

Evelyn “Punky” Mae Smith, 82, of Staunton, VA passed, VA passed away on July 3, 2021 at Shenandoah House in Fishersville, VA. Punky was born in Chesterfield County, VA to the late Clemon Earl Smith and Iris Othello Ramsey Smith. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, C.E. Smith, Jr. (Doris), sister, Bettie Lou Smith Hagan (Bill), brother, John L. Smith (Joyce Ann) and brother, David E. Smith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is preceded in death by her Forever soul Mate, Bettie Anne Mayo and loving furry animals, Butch, Junior, Xerces, Lassie, Heidi, Glory, Sassy, and Abby. Punky is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Cathleen and Curry Rickman of Mattaponi, VA; Robert and Barbara Smith of Tampa, FL; Sharon Smith of Richmond, VA; Susan Timberlake of Mechanicsville, VA and a long time udda sista, Cindy Holland of Annapolis, MD. Punky is survived by 10 grands and great grands and many loving friends.

Punky was a very knowledgeable woman, earning her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree and then moved on to her career in teaching of 30 years at Anne Arundel County Schools in Annapolis, MD. Punky was a woodworker, specifically sculpting in shore birds. She loved the outdoors, including hiking, camping, and gardening. She was an avid birdwatcher and a member of the Augusta Bird Club. She enjoyed swimming, fishing, boating, snorkeling, skiing, and playing golf. She played with the US Field Hockey touring team. She enjoyed traveling with friends from Alaska to South Africa. Punky was a reader of mysteries and English and Roman history. Her favorite expression was “Love one Another”.

A celebration of life will be held on October 29, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Sherando Lake Group Picnic Shelter WB1.

Attendees should bring a lawn chair and wear casual clothing.

Directions: from I-64, take Exit 96 just east of Stuarts Draft. Go south on State Route  624, which becomes State Route 664 at Lyndhurst. Continue south on State Route 664 approximately 8 miles to entrance to Sherando Lake Recreation Area on the right. The gatehouse is approximately 0.5 miles ahead. If the gatehouse is closed, continue through the recreation area toward the lower lake. The service road entrance to the group picnic shelter is to the left in the sharp curve before you reach the beach parking area.

Anyone is invited to share any memories at the memorial service or at www.charltonandgroomefuneralhome.com. Interment will be private.
