Doris Jean Bates, 73, of Waynesboro, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Augusta Health, Fishersville. She was born October 27, 1947 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, daughter of the late Conley Holcomb and Dorothy Holcomb.
Doris enjoyed crocheting, hand held games, going out with friends and to the casino with her sister. She collected water globes and enjoyed going to flea markets.
She was a loving mother who would do anything for her family or those she considered family. Doris was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother; she was strong willed and stubborn.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, John Harrison Bates, they were married on May 27, 1966.
Survivors include her son, Troy C. Bates and his wife, Tonya Bates of Waynesboro; three step-grandchildren, Autumn Alley, Matthew McDaniel and David McDaniel; one sister, Dianne Greene of Mooresburg, Tennessee; two brothers, Marvin Holcomb of Mooresburg, Tennessee and David Holcomb of New Market, Maryland; special friends, Kevin and Brandy Marsh, whom she thought of as son and daughter and their children, Logan, Hunter and Makynze, whom she considered as grandchildren and a close friend, Kimberly Dick, who loved her dearly.
There will be no services. Her remains will be buried in Hamblen Memory Gardens in Morristown, Tennessee.
The family is being served by Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, Fishersville, Virginia.
