Clyde E. Carter, Jr., 83, of Sherando, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at the Augusta Health Shenandoah Hospice House, with his family by his side. He was born in Augusta County on June 12, 1941, a son of the late Clyde E. Carter, Sr. and Lucille (Noe) Carter.
Clyde, whose nickname was “Sugie”, proudly served in the United States Army achieving the rank of PFC (E-3) (P). Following his military service, he worked as a structural welder. Gardening, butchering hogs, baking, and dancing the two-step were a few of his favorite hobbies. He enjoyed the outdoors going fishing, riding four wheelers, and mowing his lawn. Time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, and going on Sunday rides with his sister was time well spent in Clyde’s book.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Wayne Carter; sister, Fonda Lee Carter, and brother-in-law, Donald Ratcliff.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Lisa Dawn Campbell and husband, Brian, Jeffrey Neal Carter, and Carrie Ann Hart and husband, Casey; grandchildren: Brittany Ann Carter, Ashley Dawn Carter, Sarah Katlyn DeLoach, Joshua Owen Truslow, Justin Michael DeLoach, Lincoln Hart, Oaklee Hart, Knoxx Hart, and Abigail Hart; great grandchildren: Olivia Dawn Carter and Gracie Renee Greaver, siblings: Donna Davies (Kenny), Sheryl Ratcliff, and Larry Carter; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Clyde is also survived by Michelle Carter, Michael’s widow.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2pm on Monday, June 17, 2024 at SherLynd Baptist Church, 20 Winterview Ln, Lyndhurst, with Pastor Allen George officiating. Burial will military honors will follow at Sherando United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Josh Truslow, Justin DeLoach, Brian Campbell, Tony Cooke, Phillip Willis, and Mike Truslow.
Visitation will be conducted at 1pm until the time of the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Clyde’s memory to the Augusta Health Foundation c/o Shenandoah Hospice, P.O. Box 1000, Fishersville, VA, 22939.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Staunton VA Clinic with the CBOC Home Providers and the staff with the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah Hospice House for their loving care of Clyde and his family. A special thank you to the church family at SherLynd Baptist for their loving thoughts and prayers.
