Charles Johnson, Jr. Obituary

Charles Homer Johnson, Jr., 71, of Waynesboro, VA departed this life on Earth and made his Heavenly transition on Monday, February 6, 2023.  Affectionately known as “Charlie J”, he was the oldest of six children, born to Charles H. and Bernice Stewart Johnson on October 2, 1951. Growing up, Charlie J attended Waynesboro Public Schools and graduated from Waynesboro High School. He enjoyed sports, playing football for the Little Giants and was a talented artist who loved drawing and carving. Charlie J also had a beautiful voice and even sang in a band with several childhood friends. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve our country and was discharged with full military service honors. Once he left the Army, he worked at Virginia Power for 16 years and worked in the restaurant industry for over 30 years. More recently, he performed various janitorial and maintenance duties as a loyal employee of the Waynesboro YMCA where he was loved by many people, young and old. Charlie J was known for his sense of humor and big smile, his penchant for cooking, and his love for old school music like Average White Band, Frankie Beverly & Maze and his all-time favorite band, Bloodstone.

In addition to his parents, Charlie J is also preceded in death by his brother, Milton D. Johnson and sister, Diane Scott.  He is survived by two sisters, Sherry V. Johnson of Winchester, VA and Cynthia J. Dillard of Waynesboro, VA; one brother, Jeffrey L. Johnson of Stuarts Draft, VA; one uncle, Robert “Buddy” Stewart (Gracie); one aunt, Rosemary Carter; five nieces, LaKeya Scott, Inga Sanchez, DeShanta Dillard, Chisa Johnson, and Nya Scott; one nephew, Berneil Johnson; a host of great-nephews & great-nieces and cousins; his devoted friend, Christopher Lancaster, and many other friends.
