Robert Varner, Sr., 85, of Staunton, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018, Augusta Health-Shenandoah House, Fishersville. He was born August 30, 1933 in Monterey, Highland County, Virginia, son of the late Raymond Clark Varner and Reba Gertrude Botkin Varner.
In 1996 he retired as a composer with the News Virginian. On October 8, 1953 he was inducted into the Army and was deployed to Korea; he said that the Koreans surrendered when they heard he was on the way. He was a recipient of the “Good Conduct Medal” and the “National Defense Service Medal”. He was Honorably Discharged July 22, 1955.
He is survived by two sons, Robert (Robby) Jackson Varner, Jr. and Randy Darryl Varner, who is married to Katherine (Kat); three grandchildren, Jason Cade Varner, Aaron Chase Varner and Nicholas Colton Varner; two great-grandchildren, Rose Varner and Simon Varner; his brother and sisters, Frank Varner, Helen McLear and Lucille Biby; nieces, Brenda Napier, Debbie McGann, Linda Nash and Sherry Berry; nephew, Jerry Jackson and friends, Kelly Downs and Joyce Ruff.
