Nancy Margrett Paxton Wood, 87, of Staunton, VA, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 14, 2016, at her daughter’s home in Stuarts Draft, VA. She was born February 15, 1929 in Clifton Forge, VA to the late Alfred Ryland Paxton and Helen Elizabeth Phillips Paxton.

As one of her granddaughters posted:  “We lost a gentle powerhouse in our family. Grandma Wood went to glory. Her life made a huge impression on everyone she knew. She was kind, loving, never bearing grudges, never making judgments on anyone, and always showing the warm love of Christ that flowed out of her heart. Amidst all that, she was still a spitfire. Most certainly you would end up laughing in her presence. And you could count on the fact she would knock out anyone who messed with her family. A truly unique woman, she could tenderly hold a child in her arms and in the next moment squash a wasp with her bare hand. In her lifetime she constructed a dynasty built on love, an interconnected family of support and respect, and that is a legacy left behind for which we can all be grateful. We are blessed she was our matriarch and our leader with attributes set before us that we should all strive to achieve in our lifetime. We love you Grandma.”

Nancy graduated from Clifton Forge High School, where she lettered in basketball.  Later she was an insurance agent with Wood Insurance Agency in Fredericksburg, VA from 1969 until her retirement in 1982. She was an avid reader, the best mom and grandmother ever and was known to everyone in the community as Grandma!

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles L. Wood. She is survived by her loving children, Joan Wood Perry and husband, Edward Dale Perry of Stuarts Draft, Linda Wood Williams of Stuarts Draft, Janet Wood Ratliff of Unionville, VA and Michael Wood and wife, Leesa Wood of Port Royal, VA; 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Nancy instilled in her children that true “JOY” comes from placing Jesus first, Others second and Yourself last.

The family will receive friends from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Friday, August 26, 2016 at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 4:00pm conducted by Pastor Jack Marcom. Private burial will be in the Bowyer Family Cemetery, Covington, VA at a later date.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the medical care providers at Augusta Health and Hospice, family members who made her final trip home comfortable, dignified, and surrounded by love, and to our extended family and friends for their prayers and support.

Memorial contributions may be made to Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939.
