TAPS FOR ANOTHER WORLD WAR II VET

Homer Ashby Craun, Jr., 90, of 1948 Park Road, Waynesboro, VA, died peacefully at Augusta Health, on June 16, 2015. He was born August 4, 1924, in Bridgewater to Homer A. Craun, Sr. and Ella B. Miller Craun.

He joined the U.S. Army and served with the 793rd Military Police Battalion in the Nuernberg-Fuerth area of occupied Germany from 1945-1948. Attached to the 26th Infantry Regiment, First Infantry Division, the Battalion provided security duties at the Nuernberg War Crime Trials. During his tour of duty he met and married Marie Reichelt Mages. She and her son, Gunther Franz Mages, accompanied Homer to Waynesboro. A lifelong resident of Waynesboro, he served as a member of the Waynesboro and later the Dooms Volunteer Fire Departments. After retiring from Basic Witz Furniture and later Stanley Works, he worked at Loomis Armored Transport, Central Security Bureau, and Staunton Walmart.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie and two younger brothers, Robert and James.

He is survived by his sons, William Ashby (Julie) of Charlottesville and Gunther (Mary) of Staunton and grandchildren Major Jonathan A.(Alyse) Craun, DO, at Fort Hood TX; Sarah E. Craun, Charlottesville; Michael F. (Elisabeth) Craun, Waynesboro, Matthew A. (Shirley) Craun, Potomac, MD; and Emily W. (Jesse) O'Brien, Staunton. Also surviving are four great grandchildren, Nate and Milo, Waynesboro, and Andrew and Anna, Potomac.

Funeral services with Military Honors will be held 10:00am, Monday June 22nd, at the Mausoleum in Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Rd., Waynesboro, conducted by Pastor Don Gibson. Family and friends will gather at the cemetery for the service.
