Benjamin Washington, 92, of Greenwood, passed away, Friday, January 29, 2016 in Charlottesville.  He was born January 14, 1924 in Albemarle County, son of the late Archie Louis Washington and Mary Liza Brown Washington.

He liked to be known as “Big Bad Ben”. He was a loving husband and great father and grandfather.  Benjamin was well known in the Community and the Albemarle School System. He enjoyed weekend cookouts with his grandchildren and family. For over 45 years he has been a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Congregation. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five brothers, among them his identical twin brother, Joseph Washington; three sisters and a daughter, Charlene Washington.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gerline Washington; his children, Shirley Bourne and her husband, Robert, James Washington, Sr. and his friend, Kim, Rosetta Carr, Betty Washington and Cassandra Tynes; 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren and two sisters-in -law, Rebecca Washington and Mary Alice Sims.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Drive, Fishersville and where services will be held at 1:00 pm conducted by Lew Myrick, Officiant.  Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
